The colour bias of each forager was tested individually during a single foraging bout in the flight arena containing the array of coloured, but unrewarding, test flowers.
The pollinators of D. scandens (female apid and megachilid bees) routinely visit several nearby blossoms on a single foraging bout, suggesting that geitonogamous selfing and biparental inbreeding might be common (Ø.H. Opedal and E. Albertsen, unpubl. obs).
The prevalent behaviour, says the team, is for a single deep foraging dive followed by a series of shallow dives.
While both colonies expanded their foraging ranges throughout the season, Oahu birds appeared to have a bi-modal distribution in the non-breeding season with two distinct foraging areas at parallel locations on either side of the International Date Line (Figure 4), whereas Kure birds had a single core foraging area significantly west of the Date Line (Figure 5).
Dry matter, nutrient and CT intakes, growth performance, FCR, digestibility, nutritive value, intakes of digestible nutrients and energy, N intake, excretion, absorption, balance and retention, and MPS were higher (P<0.01) in FC compared to single forages (SF).
In our subsequent field experiments we observed large amounts of variation in nectar foraging success, ranging from losses of 160 mg to gains of 1400 mg/ hour resulting from single foraging bouts (median = 30 mg/hour).
Honey bees collect pollen from a diverse array of plant taxa, possess a near-global geographic distribution, and a single colony can forage over an area of more than 100 km (Beekman and Ratnieks, 2000; Moritz et al., 2005).
