Using the Mahalanobis distance yields significantly smaller error rates compared to the Euclidean distance while resulting in higher communication costs and computation time.
Although the requirement of low pressure conditions represents a drawback of the narrow gap solution, we show that this instrument configuration, when compared to the wide gap design, allows to achieve a significantly smaller dynamic error and a significantly wider range of linearity.
As can be seen from plots 8b and 8c, in the experiments with periodic sources the detected depths show significantly smaller errors and much less scatter than in case of single wave sources.
This fit (Fig. 2B, continuous grey line) approximated our data much more closely than a fit based on the assumption that ITD sensitivity is fixed with respect to frequency (Fig. 2B, dashed line), producing a significantly smaller root mean square error (P = 0.03; bootstrap test).
However, the distribution of the errors using BPCAfill had a significantly smaller standard deviation than the other strategy (0.303 comparing to 0.341, P-value<10−14, F-test, one tailed).
Results of measurement carried out, using the system developed at RRCAT, Indore, for two hot zones having spatial width of 1.9 m (kept at 56 °C) and 1.5 m (kept at 78 °C), located at 47 m and 85 m respectively, show that these parameters can be recovered with significantly small errors.
"The new technique uses a significantly smaller blood sample to traditional blood-smear methods, and is more sensitive and less error-prone," says Donhee Ham, professor of electrical engineering at Harvard University.
The alternative is either a significantly smaller show or a significantly inflated ticket price; neither of which particularly appeals.
