American scientists set instruments along a segment of the San Andreas fault in Parkfield, about half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles, where the seismic gap hypothesis predicted another earthquake should occur.
It is bounded to the south by the Aegean Sea, a segment of the North Anatolian Fault, the Ganos Fault (Şengör, 1979), and to the west by the metamorphic rocks of the Rhodope Massif in Greece.
This terraced section of the valley ends at a fault scarp, marking the edge of the subsiding Ghab Basin (a segment of the Dead Sea Fault Zone), which has been filled to a depth of ~ 1 km by dominantly lacustrine sediments of Pliocene–Quaternary age.
But in a "bitter irony," Dr. Heaton said, two years ago instruments detected slow slippage along a segment of the San Andreas fault near San Juan Batista.
