The phrase "a sample similar to" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when comparing or referencing a sample that shares characteristics with another sample.
Example: "In our study, we analyzed a sample similar to the one used in previous research to ensure consistency in our findings."
Alternatives: "a comparable sample to" or "a sample akin to".
