JM observed a sample of quantitative and qualitative data collection in every district (22 ANMs and SNs, 1 PHN, 2 DHOs, 3 in-charges, 2 women's group members, 3 HFMCs).
A sample of the qualitative questions is presented in Table 1.
To maximise the validity of our findings, two researchers will separately analyse a sample of the qualitative data and then meet to compare their analyses and agree a framework for full analysis of all data.
This could be done by conducting a systematic quality appraisal of a random sample of qualitative and mixed methods studies reported in the last year in electronic health and medical journals.
The model derived from these interviews is based on a small sample of qualitative data.
We also recognise that the articles included in this assessment represent a limited sample of qualitative and mixed methods studies, both in number and in research fields.
The findings, from one focus group attended by panel members, are presented briefly here for information (Appendix 5), but academic papers, focusing on a larger sample of qualitative research, will follow publication of this report.
Combining a detailed quantitative survey of local users of a sample of facilities with individual qualitative accounts of users' views and experiences, this study was designed to explore the extent to which local populations were aware of the accountability mechanism, and the extent to which it influenced their experiences when visiting a health centre.
For much the same cost as the unreliable routine data collected, in this case on infant and maternal health outcomes across the country, we engaged a sample of communities in a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
