"You're basically taking a large quantity of water and trying to force it through a very fine filter," he said, adding that depending on the amount of water being filtered and the "total dissolved solids" in that water, a reverse osmosis filter can use anywhere from three to nine gallons of water for every gallon of filtered water it produces.
If possible, install a reverse osmosis filter in your house, at least for your drinking water or use a carbon filter (like Brita).
