At each frame, only those spectral peaks with an amplitude higher than a threshold μ are selected, removing the rest of spectral information and obtaining this way a sparse representation containing a subset of spectral bins.
To achieve a computable representation of a subset of cell wall biosynthetic pathways with physical localization knowledge included, we first consolidated the existing knowledge on genes and enzymes involved in the NDP-sugar biosynthetic pathways in a bioenergy-relevant crop, Populus trichocarpa.
To quantify this trend, we analyzed a large set of runs included in 25 trajectories, each trajectory corresponding to a different animal (representation of a subset of 10 trajectories in Figure 6D).
In examining the positions involved most frequently in covariations, we discovered a dramatic over-representation of a subset of five hydrophobic core positions.
Overall, in C. albicans there was a clear over-representation of a subset of codon-triplets, namely (CAA-CAA-CAA), (GAA-GAA-GAA), (AAT-AAT-AAT) or (GAT-GAT-GAT) (Table 2) and strong repression of another subset, namely (GAA-AAA-AAA), (AAA-AAA-AAT), (AAA-AAA-AAA) or (TTA-AAA-AAA) (Table 3), indicating higher bias of codon-triplet usage in this human pathogen (Additional file 1, Figure S1).
With this representation every subset of cells is a possible cluster S, or in the context of outbreak detection, a potential outbreak region.

In work [9], the knowledge available as known zone values in the slice is translated in the coarse representation basis: a subset of Gaussian coefficients is fitted to values in the known zone (Omega); these coefficients are then used as a constraint for the reconstruction.
