The first is Freire's (1973) interest in processes through which marginalised social groupings are most likely to develop critical understandings of the obstacles to their health and well-being as the first step in a reflection-action cycle in which they collectively decide to change previously health-damaging attitudes and behaviours (Rifkin & Pridmore, 2001).
