The phrase "a recent species" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when referring to a species that has been discovered or identified in a relatively short time frame, often in a scientific or ecological context.
Example: "The researchers were excited to announce the discovery of a recent species of frog that had never been documented before."
Alternatives: "a newly discovered species" or "a recently identified species".
