His father, who is retired, worked in New York as an environmental engineer in the air quality division of the Environmental Protection Agency.
He also urged the state to set up a quality assurance division to audit the agency's performance.
He added that the air quality division in the then-Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (Detr) saw there was a problem he said – that local air pollution would increase as a result – so a national system of air quality standards was created.
"We lost the public over the past decade by moving slowly and focusing on solitary contaminants that most people have never heard of," said Dr. Pankaj Parekh, director of the water quality division for Los Angeles.
