"This book can't become a sacred text," said Ann Douglas, a professor of literature at Columbia University, adding that "there can be no final text because there is not one".
Instead of rewriting and trimming the text, Mr. Brush, a professor of science history at the University of Maryland, compromised with the publisher by agreeing to post his 100-page bibliography online.
"It is ultimately impossible to use Freudian concepts to definitively understand subjects without direct, extensive access to the people themselves," writes Greenberg, a professor of history and journalism at Rutgers, whose text accompanies doodles of 25 presidents selected by the creators of Cabinet magazine.
Mickenberg, an associate professor of American studies at the University of Texas, Austin, and Nel, a professor of English at Kansas State University, have nonetheless found 44 texts that attempt to attach children to social justice permanently.
"I think his hope is that Jews who are completely turned off by religion, by rabbis, by Jewish texts, religious texts will find their identity within this school," said Jonathan D. Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University.
