The structure of a language is defined by a phrase structure syntax, the meaning in terms of the effects which the execution of a sequence of interpretation rules exerts upon a fixed set of variables, called the Environment.
The example in 29b will have a phrase structure like (Figure 7): Open image in new window Figure 7 Extraction in Tagalog transitive (Aldridge 2008a, 2008b : 1445).
It has the same status as the syntactic hypothesis that in natural languages all branching in a phrase structure tree is binary or the semantic hypothesis that in natural languages all quantificational determiners are conservative.
In a follow-up study to investigate the third dimension, Hauser & Fitch (2004) found that while their tamarin monkeys could discriminate strings conforming to a simple finite state grammar which allows arbitrary repetitions of a simple pattern (e.g., ABn), but they could not master a phrase structure grammar (such as AnBn).
In line with this theory, it was demonstrated that humans were able to easily learn an artificial Finite State Grammar (FSG) (i.e., "flat structures") and also a Phrase Structure Grammar (PSG) (i.e., "hierarchical structures") whereas monkeys were only able to learn the FSG, and not the PSG [2].
It was therefore argued that the ELAN reflects an early stage of grammar processing where the information about a word's lexical category is accessed and a phrase structure representation is being built (Friederici, 2002).

Fitch decided to test the girl on a higher level of the Chomsky hierarchy, a "phrase-structure grammar".
Hauser, Chomsky, and Fitch, in their 2002 paper, had stated that a phrase-structure grammar, which makes greater demands on memory and pattern recognition, represents the minimum foundation necessary for human language.
According to Chomsky (1956), "a phrase-structure grammar is defined by a finite vocabulary (alphabet) Vp, a finite set Σ of initial strings in Vp, and a finite set F of rules of the form: X → Y, where X and Y are strings in Vp".
For example, sentences beginning with phrases such as the garden was on the worked, which violates an English phrase structure rule, often elicit a brain response called the early left anterior negativity (ELAN).
Each voice is also governed by an underlying phrase structure applied to all of them, so that the combined parts form unified musical phrases.
