The phrase "a past example" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when referring to a specific instance or case from the past that illustrates a point or concept.
Example: "To better understand the impact of climate change, let's consider a past example of how rising sea levels affected coastal communities."
Alternatives: "a historical instance" or "a previous case".
Below is a past example of a union strike in 2012 and how it was resolved.
