In the late 20th century, a glossy-magazine version of aspirational health went something like this: first you lie in a fluffy, white bathrobe with your hair in a towel, with mashed avocado on your skin as a "natural face mask" and cucumber slices on your eyes, and then you go out for brunch – eggs benedict, probably a buck's fizz, and then a salad with slices of kiwi fruit.
That was when her mother, a doctor turned chemist who had just finished creating a natural face cream she hoped to take to market, was hit by a car.
In three experiments, we extend and test the Sumby and Pollack (1954) metric to allow the comparison of an agent relative to a standard or reference, and also propose a new metric based on the fuzzy logical model of perception (FLMP) to describe the benefit provided by a synthetic animated face relative to the benefit provided by a natural face.
A valid metric would allow direct comparisons accross different experiments and would give measures of the benfit of a synthetic animated face relative to a natural face (or indeed any two conditions) and how this benefit varies as a function of the type of synthetic face, the test items (e.g., syllables versus sentences), different individuals, and applications.
Paired t-tests revealed that RTs were significantly slower for neutral (t[31] = 8.38, p = .002) and for happy faces (t[31] = 4.03, p<.0001) when a virtual compared to a natural face had to be recognized (see Fig. 1B).
