The phrase "a more general reason" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when discussing a broader explanation or justification for a particular point or argument.
Example: "While there are specific factors to consider, a more general reason for the decline in sales is the overall economic downturn."
Alternatives: "a broader explanation" or "a more overarching reason".
