The phrase "a modest variation of" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when describing a slight change or difference in something, often in comparison to an original version.
Example: "The new design is a modest variation of the previous model, incorporating a few updated features."
Alternatives: "a slight modification of" or "a small adjustment to".
