The phrase "a modest overlap" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe a small or limited area of similarity or commonality between two subjects or concepts.
Example: "There is a modest overlap in the research findings of both studies, suggesting some common trends."
Alternatives: "a slight overlap" or "a small intersection".
Comparing the genes regulated by EBNA3B in LCLs with those of BL31, we see only a modest overlap (Figure 8; Table S6).
