In September, Vanguard, the mutual fund company, announced that it would open three managed payout funds early next year.
And in 1979, the United States had trouble managing payouts to some individual investors on time (partly because of a failure of word processing equipment) and thus was in technical default.
How will the club manage payouts, divestiture (reducing assets or investments) or dissolution?
Eric Jackson, a managing member of the hedge fund Ironfire Capital, argued on Forbes in November that the Web pioneer should use its patent armory to wring a handsome payout from Facebook.
Amid the broader market's gains, a Morningstar compilation of 32 managed-payout funds posted a two-year annualized total return, with reinvestment of all distributions, of 6.10 percent through Sept. 30.
Charles Schwab, a distant second to Vanguard in the managed-payout business, has three such funds — Monthly Income Fund/Enhanced Payout, Monthly Income Fund/Maximum Payout and Monthly Income Fund/Moderate Payout.
As a result, this new category — known as managed-payout, income-replacement or retirement-income funds — was not only slow to catch on but it also promptly landed a particularly vulnerable group of investors in a financial ditch.
Although consumers have been slow to embrace managed-payout funds, the group's rationale, at least, seems solid.
But some, said the attorney managing the payouts, are simply lacking paperwork needed to process their payments.
