Indeed, he would scare anybody, with his appearance of an animal "created in hell to torment the damned by its mere presence", his blood-covered claws and the "streaked, ochreous foam" that froths from his mouth, and his eyes, "the eyes of a mad creature, inhabiting a world of cruelty and pain".
Laura bears an uncanny resemblance to the woman in white, an apparition or mad creature who is never far from the gloom that dampens the characters' operatic flounces and furbelows.
