Having started as a low-level case, the scandal has now reached the very top of the political pyramid, with fresh disclosures emerging almost daily, directly threatening Mr. Rajoy's government and rattling financial markets.
Although indiscriminate cross-breeding with exotic breeds is a major threat to the conservation of genetic resources, it is also evident that introgression of foreign material at such a low level in this case did not affect the identity of the breed.
