In brief, this algorithm involves groups of variables passing each other information about their most likely assignment; a well-known special case of this method is the Viterbi algorithm for hidden Markov models (HMMs).
Accounting for the observed G--frequencies, one can conclude that the likely assignment is to a metallic tube (11,5) (Table 2, Figure 5).
