It may be that Rorty's early work, inspired by a less critical, less dialectical reading of Quine and Sellars than that offered in PMN, is more constructive than therapeutic in tone and jargon, and therefore from Rorty's later perspective in an important sense misguided.
And the funny thing (perhaps cruelly funny from Cash's later perspective) is that it was a hit, spending eleven weeks on the country charts — better than anything else he'd done in years.
However, and this is the second reason for which Austin is misled, he had not in "Other Minds" (1946) yet attained the later perspective on which that is a clear possibility.

At a later point, the authors put this in the right perspective.
