Uneven information about reconstructive options is a subset of a larger problem, said Dr. Amy K. Alderman, an assistant professor of plastic surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor.
While none publicly embraced the claim by some black leaders that the official response to the disaster was slow because most of the victims were black, the city's mayoral candidates approached the issue of race as a piece of a larger problem, saying that the relief effort points to a lack of empathy by President Bush toward impoverished city dwellers.
But stop-and-frisk is part of a larger problem, say its opponents.
"This is a symptom of a much larger problem," said Michael Watras, president and chief executive at Straightline International, a branding consultancy in New York.
"You don't solve a problem by creating an even larger problem," said Adrienne Esposito, the associate executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, in Farmingdale.
"But I would be surprised if this were a large problem," he said.
And the larger problem, say Mexican producers, is that only an estimated 9percentto17percentcent of the money from ticket sales finds its way back to the producer.
The real and larger problem, says Hunt, was the widespread attitude in journalism, and elsewhere, that women were served adequately by what was thought to be benign paternalism.
"Seventy percent of the world's supply comes from West Africa, and it's also a part of the world that has some of the largest problems," said Bill Guyton, president of the World Cocoa Foundation, which represents cocoa companies seeking to foster sustainability in the industry.
"If we play well and bounce back and have good effort and compete Sunday, hopefully it's not a sign of a larger problem," Polian said.
This intense emotional involvement by the judge leads to a larger problem, critics say.
