The phrase "a large amount of unexplained" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when referring to a significant quantity of something that has not been clarified or accounted for.
Example: "The investigation revealed a large amount of unexplained data that needed further analysis."
Alternatives: "a significant quantity of unaccounted" or "a considerable volume of unclear".
However, in all our models there is a large amount of unexplained variation (R-squared values for our correlation models vary between 0.18 and 0.41).
