There's a very interesting blog posted this morning by Melissa Benn (@melissa_benn), asking whether it's time to set up a movement to save state schools: "In the past few weeks, in a series of discussions around the country about what is happening to our education system, a lot of people have asked me if there is scope for a kind of Save our Schools movement – similar to the one in the US.
Still, all this appears more impressive if put in a context of the latest higher education and research spending plans, and discussions in other European countries such as the UK that seem to be fanatical believers in a kind of saving-at-all-cost doctrine.I don't support this doctrine because we know that public spending does not correlate with economic growth.
(P5) " I do have some patients who say would go to the polyclinics twice a year but yet then, they're kind of saving up their money so they could come to [private practice] for, as they put it, a proper check because they perceive in the polyclinic the doctors just rewrite prescriptions".
But I am an optimist so how can I find some kind of saving grace in all this?
You could see "The Lord of the Rings" as a kind of rescue operation, saving the Nordic myths from misuse — perhaps even saving Wagner from himself.
