Studies in Chinese intonation show that the diverse surface patterns can be accounted for by two consistent features: 1. Interrogative intonation has a higher phrase curve than declarative intonation; 2. Sentence final syllables have more careful intonation and wider pitch swings in interrogative sentences (Yuan et al., 2002; Zeng, Martin and Boulakia, 2004).
Consequently, although computer-modified and natural playbacks contained courtship songs with natural phrases (see Fig. 1 for definition), i.e., phrases with natural pulse rate, computer-modified playbacks were characterized by a higher phrase rate.
