Advanced T classification (p = 0.007), T3-T4 grouping (p = 0.001; Figure 4), positive NG2/CSPG4 transcript expression (p = 0.029; Figure 4), or GPC1 positivity in stromal cells (p = 0.007) were all conditions strongly associated with a high loco-regional tumour relapse rate (Table 3).
AHF was associated with a higher loco-regional control rate (88±8%) than CF (57±9%), (P=0.01).
Patients with strong EGFR staining intensity had a higher loco-regional recurrence rate (17% vs 10%) and a poorer RFS than those with negative to moderate staining intensity but without significant statistical difference.

A meta-analysis of randomized trials in which definitive (chemo-) radiotherapy was compared with either surgery alone or surgery+/−induction treatment showed that overall survival rates after surgery and definitive CRT were similar, though there was a trend for more cancer-related deaths in the definitive CRT groups due to a higher risk of loco-regional progression [ 13].
On the other hand, patients with a high risk profile do not show such a steep dose response relationship because of the risks of loco- regional and ultimately systemic spread.
The high prevalence of loco-regional complications among HIV negative participants in this study is possibly related to a high prevalence of infections due to necrotizing micro-organisms in this subgroup.
