You can use it when referring to a physical device that protects a network by controlling incoming and outgoing traffic based on predetermined security rules.
Example: "To enhance our network security, we decided to invest in a hardware firewall that can effectively block unauthorized access."
Alternatives: "a physical firewall" or "an appliance firewall".
