The phrase "a group that encompassed" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when describing a collection of individuals, entities, or concepts that are included within a larger category or framework.
Example: "The organization was a group that encompassed various stakeholders from different sectors."
Alternatives: "a collective that included" or "a coalition that covered".
