The phrase "a gear problem" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to refer to an issue or malfunction related to gears, often in mechanical or automotive contexts.
Example: "The mechanic informed me that the car's performance issues were due to a gear problem."
Alternatives: "a transmission issue" or "a mechanical malfunction".
