Stimulus retinal position is a first requirement for implementing a gain field.
In a gain field, visual responses of retinotopically-organized neurons are modulated by postural information, such as eye or neck position.
Responses to passive and letterotopy stimuli were qualitatively similar: both groups showed a gain field effect with a response bias for the straight-ahead direction (Fig. 3).
Gaze position did not affect the topography of polar phase-angle maps, confirming that coding was retinotopic, but did affect the amplitude of the BOLD response, consistent with a gain field.

The variation of perceived orientation with gaze angle could reflect a neural gain field effect, but could also be attributable to the direction of approach to the target, - the proximal face being closer to the fovea and therefore enjoy a competitive advantage in representing a visible cube face.

The optic flow selectivity was embedded in a patchy architecture within the gain field architecture.
We hypothesize that this difference is due to the multiplicative effect (gain field) of a visual inputs (fixation light) and eye position that may lower the threshold for cell activity, thus producing an earlier expression of the presaccade eye position signal.
