The phrase "a function of the index" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used in contexts related to mathematics, statistics, or programming, where you are discussing how a particular variable or outcome is determined by the index.
Example: "The results of the experiment are a function of the index used to measure the variables involved."
Alternatives: "dependent on the index" or "determined by the index".
