The phrase "a distance based on" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing measurements or calculations that are determined by a specific criterion or reference point.
Example: "The route was planned to cover a distance based on the most efficient path available."
Alternatives: "a distance determined by" or "a distance calculated from".
