It can be used when referring to a specific form of safeguarding or defense against a threat or harm.
Example: "The new policy provides a direct protection for employees against workplace harassment."
Alternatives: "immediate protection" or "explicit protection".
The Red List status doesn't confer any direct protection to animals listed as threatened, but countries and international conventions use it in considering whether to implement greater protections.
