The phrase "a different mode when" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe a change in method or approach that occurs under specific circumstances or conditions.
Example: "The system operates in a different mode when the user selects the advanced settings."
Alternatives: "an alternative mode when" or "a distinct mode when".
