The phrase "a decrease in the extent of" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing a reduction in the scope, range, or degree of something.
Example: "The study revealed a decrease in the extent of biodiversity in the region over the past decade."
Alternatives: "a reduction in the scope of" or "a decline in the range of".
