The phrase "a dead version" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe a version of something that is no longer active, functional, or relevant.
Example: "The software update was supposed to improve performance, but instead, it created a dead version that users couldn't access."
Alternatives: "an obsolete version" or "a non-functional version".
A catalytically dead version of the Cas9 nuclease, dCas9, combined with a short chimeric single guide RNA (sgRNA), can bind and repress specific genes through sgRNA-mediated DNA binding.
