For the purpose of this study we've focused primarily on a data flow in a typical obstetrics US scan, performed in B-Mode, with spatial resolution of 256×256, maintaining a contrast resolution of 8 bits (256 shades of gray).
The phase-contrast X-ray CT, which has a contrast resolution of 3.6 mg/ml (Momose et al., 2005), makes it possible to visualize most of the organs clearly without a contrast agent or staining.
MRI has the advantage that no ionising radiation is employed and offers a high contrast resolution multiplanar examination with a detailed demonstration of the pelvic floor anatomy.
Low-dose protocols of the chest can be achievable due to a high contrast resolution between the air and lung nodules, gaining a low radiation dose while maintaining good diagnostic quality.

Such de-noising methods not only lower the noise, but also yield a higher contrast resolution.
The pulmonary abnormalities associated with cystic fibrosis have different appearances depending on the modality chosen to evaluate them (Fig. 1), and certain abnormalities can only be evaluated with CT or MRI, since CT has a higher contrast resolution than radiography and tomosynthesis and MRI is performed with intravenous contrast, enabling detection of perfusion defects (Table 1).
MRI images are two- and three-dimensional and have a higher contrast resolution, consequently soft tissues can be distinguished more efficiently.
Initial clinical experience at the bedside and a contrast-detail study found a superior low-contrast resolution and a potential for dose reduction without loss of image quality with the new needle-image-plate/line scanner (NI) as compared to the standard powder image plate/flying spot scanner (PIP) [ 8, 9] (Figs. 1b, 3).
With regard to contrast resolution, a score of ten represented superior contrast depiction between different soft tissues, a score of one indicated the most inferior contrast and five indicated acceptable contrast.
