The coating of lead by long chain carboxylates by immersion has been studied extensively [6 12].
The lead metal reflections are smaller for samples coated with lower inhibitor concentrations indicating that the coating of lead tetradecanoate is thicker for low concentrations.
Known practices of the time and the techniques used here, allow us to make this hypothesis: in order to prevent the danger of gold and colours flaking off the surface of the parchment, this was given a thin coat of lead white paint [17].
