The phrase "a broad model to" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing a general framework or approach that encompasses a wide range of elements or ideas.
Example: "The researchers developed a broad model to analyze the various factors influencing climate change."
Alternatives: "a comprehensive framework for" or "a wide-ranging approach to".
However, in order to correctly define such a broad model we will require a more comprehensive, and qualitatively better, collection of homologous proteins.
