What YES officials willingly discussed yesterday was the hiring of Fred Hickman, the former senior anchor for CNN Sports and CNN/SI, as the lead studio host for Yankees and Nets pregame and postgame programs, and the hiring of Suzyn Waldman as a play-by-play announcer for 35 games and as a pregame and postgame reporter for 115 games.
But on Tuesday night, a panel of three arbitrators delivered much of what YES wanted by ordering Cablevision to carry YES as an expanded basic cable channel -- not as a premium service as it has been under a one-year agreement that ends Wednesday, several executives with knowledge of the ruling said.
That led to arbitrators ordering Cablevision to carry YES as an expanded basic channel at a price close to what YES desired.
Now no one knows what "yes" means, either.
Cablevision contends that the $2 fee is four times what YES is worth and has offered to carry YES on the same basis that it shows MSG and Fox Sports New York, as part of a premium package.
In a letter yesterday offering his acceptance to James L. Dolan, the president of Cablevision, Hindery wrote that Cablevision charges cable systems about $2 a subscriber to carry MSG and that is what YES is worth -- if not more.
