After years of fierce debate involving scientists, food manufacturers, farmers and environmental groups, Congress has passed a bill that would make it mandatory to inform consumers about the GMOs — or genetically modified organisms — in their food.
The GMOs included a soybean plant whose beans produce more oil and an acre or so of rice that can avoid leaf death.
The question is, where is the evidence that indicates that the GMOs on the market are unsafe?
Moreover, escaped GMOs could wreak havoc on ecosystems if the GMOs outcompete other species (a main concern about the GM salmon).
While there are a number of techniques available for inserting genes into plants, most of the GMOs being made today use two methods.
This situation would be detrimental because the GMOs would grow faster and reproduce more often, allowing them to take resources away from non-GMO relatives if they inhabit the same environment.
