The camshaft
noun
A shaft fitted with cams; especially one in a piston engine that activates the valves.
Exact(55)
The camshaft is set spinning by a rubber belt or steel chain connected to the engine's crankshaft, the component that ultimately provides the power to the car's wheels.
The camshaft, which opens and closes the valves, is driven from the crankshaft by a chain drive or gears on the front end of the engine.
The camshaft is a shaft having some semi-oval protrusions which are designed to control the open and close intervals of the inlet and exhaust poppet valves in the gasoline and diesel engines.
The camshaft is built up from two-cylinder sections, each machined from a solid forging and complete with two-inlet valve, two exhaust valve and two fuel pump cams.
The camshaft and valve gear components should be washed in solvent, to remove grease and dust accumulated during transport, to ensure a clean installation.
Thus the camshaft will statically generate zero output torque.

The model includes the lumped parameter model of the belt transmission that drives the camshafts, the finite element model of the camshafts, and the lumped parameter model of two cam-valve mechanisms (one for each camshaft).
The timing system included the geartrain, which transmits power from the crankshaft to the camshafts, and the valve train, formed by the camshafts and the cam-follower mechanisms for the valve actuation.
At the same time, the ignition timing was tweaked to improve throttle response and the camshafts revised for better high-r.p.m. performance.
Many other parts are either modified stock items for greater performance, like the camshafts, or racing parts that share key elements with the standard part, like the pistons' bowl-shaped dome, which is critical for efficient combustion.
To make its rated 195 horsepower, the 1.2-liter engine is radically oversquare (the cylinder bore is much larger than the stroke), the camshafts are driven by chain and gear rather than by belt, and each cylinder gets two fuel injectors.
