8. Out of Time: The Pleasures and Perils of Ageing by Lynne Segal (2013) Segal's gentle and sustained engagement with Simone de Beauvoir's various writings about ageing offers a rich read that fires in multiple directions, ricocheting off psychoanalysis, literature and feminism.
(And that's a highly abbreviated list of the pricey programs Mr. Jealous supports.) To pay for it all, Mr. Jealous would soak the rich — read: Montgomery County — by raising taxes on the top 1percentt of taxpayers; legalize and tax marijuana; and slash spending on roads (by building fewer of them) and prisons (by overhauling the criminal-justice system).
The rich read to the poor there; it was a place of education.
The first two-thirds of "Repeat Until Rich" read like a rocket, a literate and swaggering heist caper of the sort that Jonathan Lethem and Quentin Tarantino might fry up together from an old Elmore Leonard recipe.
Those shows had a rich read on human nature, and I would defend them against frankly most of the movies and even American novels of the past 15 years.
There's a lot of nonfiction, or a lot of writing that carries a spirit of non-fictional inquiry — scientific data, arcane historical lore, literary and theological allusion — on nearly every page of the book, which makes it a very rich read.
