Post-cardiac surgery pulmonary dysfunction may be underreported.
The causes of death in the 12 children with DS and a CHD were as follows: respiratory distress (n = 3, all AVSD), neonatal infection (n = 2, AVSD and aortic regurgitation), asphyxia (n = 1, AVSD), post cardiac operation (n = 1, AVSD) and necrotizing enterocolitis (n = 1, VSD).
Cognitive decline post-cardiac surgery is of clinical concern.
