In a brand-new study, one of my favorite researchers, MIT's Sinan Aral, found that he could experimentally boost the popularity of articles 32percentt on a news aggregator, like Reddit.com, by posting them with an initial few likes.
Castillo et al. show that the attention that news articles generate across social networks (number of Facebook shares, number of tweets and retweets, the language of the Twitter messages) is effective in predicting the popularity of articles on a news site [14].
