Formerly considered a subfamily (Paradoxornithinae) of the babbler family (Timaliidae) or a subfamily (Panurinae) of the Old World flycatcher family (Muscicapidae), they have also been raised to the family Paradoxornithidae.
They named it Muscicapa goodenovii, and placed it among the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae.
The Australian robins were placed in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae, and the whistler family Pachycephalidae, before being classified in their own family Petroicidae, or Eopsaltridae.
These birds span several families, but most are classified with Old World flycatchers in the family Muscicapidae.
Considered in the narrow sense, the family is thought to include the Old World flycatchers (subfamily Muscicapinae) and the wattle-eyes (subfamily Platysteirinae).
Many taxonomists expand the family Muscicapidae to include the thrushes, warblers, and babblers, treating the Old World flycatchers in two or more subfamilies, Muscicapinae (typical flycatchers) and Monarchinae (monarch flycatchers) and, in some classification systems, Rhipidurinae (fantailed flycatchers).
In addition, some Old World flycatchers (Terpsiphone, Monarcha) are related to other members of the corvoid assemblage (a group containing the crows, shrikes, vireos, kinglets, and others) rather than the muscicapine flycatchers.
Most taxonomists agree that the oscines contain three large groups: the crows, Old World orioles, birds of paradise, and diverse insect-eating birds of Australia and New Guinea, (2) the thrushes, babblers, Old World flycatchers, Old World warblers, kinglets, and allies, and (3) the finches, icterids, tanagers, and allies.
Since its initial description, the picathartes have been placed in more than five different families, including those of crows (Corvidae), starlings (Sturnidae), Old World flycatchers (Muscicapidae), babblers (Timaliidae) and Old World warblers (Sylviidae).
