At early time points after infection, we did not detect any difference in bacterial burdens, but by 4 months we observed moderately increased burdens in the infected knockout mice (∼0.50 log; Figure 2A).
We found a moderately high burden of pulmonary TB and TB symptoms in this urban setting, especially among elderly.
As the administrative data definition became more restrictive, the cohort became slightly older with a moderately higher burden of diabetes and hypertension.
In addition, PZQ has reduced S. haematobium worm burdens in a moderately endemic situation in Burundi by 94% [23].
While immunization by BCG prime/Ad boost i.n or i.m only moderately reduced bacterial burden in the lung (Fig. 2A; p = 0.05 and p = 0.08 compared to saline, respectively), it markedly reduced bacterial counts in the spleen (p = 0.002 and p = 0.002 compared to saline, respectively), being even slightly better than BCG alone (Fig. 2B).
The reduced consumption of antibiotics in women initially treated with NSAIDs was, however, associated with a moderately higher symptom burden.
As additional indicators of differences in symptom burden at home and in the hospital we calculated percentages of patients for which hospital-reported symptom burden is at least 10 points (i.e. moderately) worse than symptom burden reported at home.
Varied ctDNA levels were observed among patients, with a median value of 0.18 (95% CI, 0.08 to 0.36) and ctDNA level was moderately correlated with tumor burden (sum of the longest diameters of the target lesions on CT scans) (Spearman r = 0.413, p = 0.056, Supplementary Fig. 4).
