Suffixes often are accompanied by changes in the stem, such as the doubling of consonants in Inuit e.g., nanuq "polar bear," dual nannuk "two polar bears," plural nannut "several polar bears"; inuk "person," dual innuk, plural inuit; umialik "owner of boat (umiaq), chief," dual umiallak, plural umialgit (Inupiaq).
No doubt with that history in mind, David Robinson offered the INUK students "some sort of context" for their figures.
"There isn't one Inuk who hasn't had someone close to them affected by suicide.
The most common reasons for alleged wrongful conviction in cases deemed eligible by the INUK include false allegations (36%), poor defence (usually involving failure of defence solicitors to present evidence of innocence at the time of trial – 28%), police misconduct (23%) and false witness testimonies (10%).

The Innocence Network UK (INUK), the co-ordinating organisation for innocence projects based in UK universities, was set up in September 2004 because the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) – the body founded in the wake of notorious cases such as the Guildford Four and the Birmingham Six – had not sufficiently resolved wrongful convictions.

"During my childhood, everyone was trying to throw away Inuk culture," she tells me sadly.
