"Every day, mosques and other faith institutions across the country are providing help for those in need, and acting as a centre for our communities.
"They have attacked the most vulnerable in society, slashed the budget for public services and undermined the credibility of these institutions.
Abbott said the federal government believed "the states should take more responsibility for their public hospitals and for their public schools and we make no apologies for wanting the states to be grown up, adult governments that take responsibility for the programs that are theirs, for the institutions that they run".
"Over recent decades, technological change, globalization and an erosion of the institutions and practices that support shared prosperity in the U.S. have put the middle class under increasing stress.

With events taking place at venues ranging from tiny, niche museums in Orkney and Norfolk to national giants such at the Natural History Museum and the V&A, the founding ethos of the festival is to celebrate the diverse and often quirky cultural landscape of Britain and to give a voice and platform to smaller institutions.
Speaking to the committee, Mitchell said he was looking at how other European development finance institutions operated and was seeking to make CDC "the best DFI in the world".
The shadow home secretary said the government should work more closely with the devolved institutions and councils to assess how many refugees they would be prepared to take.
These acts are not merely compatible with liberalism – they are a necessary condition for any society that is free in its culture as well as in its laws and institutions.
